Maya Ko Sansar

Early Support from Mitini Nepal (2022)

The year 2022 marked the humble but determined beginning of Maya Ko Sansar (World of Love)—an organization born out of lived experience, deep-rooted injustice, and an unshakable will to uplift marginalized voices, especially those of transgender sex workers, female sex workers, male sex workers, and other sexual and gender minorities in Nepal.

At this early and crucial stage, Maya Ko Sansar received foundational guidance and support from Mitini Nepal, a respected and long-standing LGBTQIA+ rights organization. Their support came at a time when the organization was just taking shape, still navigating how to translate a dream into sustainable action. Mitini Nepal extended mentorship in three critical areas:

  1. Legal Advocacy Support – Equipping the team with the legal knowledge needed to advocate for community rights.

  2. Legal Literacy Programs – Empowering the organization to educate its own members and beneficiaries about their constitutional rights and the laws affecting them.

  3. Institutional Development Assistance – Providing structural, administrative, and strategic advice to ensure Maya Ko Sansar had the capacity to grow as a sustainable, rights-based organization.

With this early support, Maya Ko Sansar was able to do far more than simply exist—it began to thrive with purpose.

During this period, the organization carried out several key groundwork activities:

  • Community Needs Assessment: Through direct conversations, listening sessions, and grassroots outreach, the team deeply engaged with the transgender and sex worker communities to understand their immediate needs, from mental health support to legal protection and economic survival.

  • Organizational Structure Formation: The early team, led by founder Sunita Lama, focused on setting up transparent internal governance, defining roles and responsibilities, and preparing documentation and protocols for future operations.

  • Strategic Planning and Vision Setting: This phase was about more than survival—it was about defining a clear mission. The team charted out both short-term and long-term advocacy goals, including health access, legal rights, community education, and economic empowerment.

  • Building Trust in the Community: One of the greatest accomplishments of 2022 was gaining the trust of those who had long been marginalized—even by systems meant to help them. Maya Ko Sansar became a place where people could feel seen, heard, and safe.

The foundational support in 2022 didn’t just help launch an organization—it set the tone for an entire movement. It allowed Maya Ko Sansar to emerge with clarity, credibility, and community backing. It gave hope to those who had none, and it reminded the world that even the most marginalized voices, when supported with empathy and empowerment, can create meaningful, lasting change.

This year laid the bricks of a future where dignity, respect, and human rights are not privileges—but guaranteed rights for every individual, regardless of their gender identity, sexual orientation, or profession.
