Drug Addiction Among Transgender Youth: Understanding, Addressing, and Preventing
In recent years, Mayako Sansar (World of Love) has witnessed a heartbreaking rise in drug use among transgender youth in Nepal. This issue goes far beyond addiction itself—it’s a symptom of deep emotional trauma, social rejection, and systemic neglect. Young transgender individuals, especially those who identify as sex workers, are often pushed to the margins of society, denied family acceptance, and subjected to continuous violence and discrimination. For many, drug use becomes a way to escape the daily mental and emotional suffering that comes from simply existing in a world that refuses to accept them.

The root causes of this crisis are complex but interconnected. Transgender youth are frequently abandoned by their families at an early age, bullied in schools, excluded from employment opportunities, and mistreated by public institutions. As a result, they are left without financial security, emotional support, or safe housing—conditions that push them into risky environments, including drug networks. Many turn to drugs in an attempt to forget the pain of rejection, loneliness, and violence they endure as members of the LGBTIQA+ community.

At Mayako Sansar (World of Love), we recognize that addressing drug addiction among transgender youth requires more than just awareness—it demands compassion, structural support, and sustained action. Our organization is actively working on preventive and rehabilitative measures, including:

  • Community-Based Awareness Campaigns to educate youth on the risks of drug abuse and the importance of mental well-being
  • Psychosocial Counseling and Peer Support programs to provide a safe space for emotional healing and sharing lived experiences
  • Linkage to Healthcare Services, including drug rehabilitation centers and mental health professionals
  • Family and Community Sensitization Programs to reduce stigma and promote acceptance of transgender individuals
  • Empowerment Through Skills Training and educational support to help transgender youth become self-reliant and reduce vulnerability to harmful environments

Our goal is not only to save lives, but to restore hope, dignity, and opportunity for a community that has been neglected for far too long. Mayako Sansar (World of Love)stands committed to uplifting transgender youth from addiction by addressing the root causes and walking alongside them toward recovery, empowerment, and a future filled with pride—not pain.
